Saturday, February 23rd, the Hilo Medical Center Foundation joined Dr. Kristine McCoy, the Residency Director at the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Clinic, hosting local physicians and community members to visit the River Cottage on the campus of Hilo Medical Center. Armed with coffee and pastries, the Foundation and Dr. McCoy, along with Dr. Dennis Lee, Dr. Kathleen Katt, and Dr. Jon Martell provided those in attendance an explanation of the need and function of a local Residency Program. The event was a great success!
House Bill 417 is the answer to the lack of available primary care physicians not only on our island, but throughout the rural areas of our state. Studies have shown that 70% of medical students choose to stay and practice medicine in the hospital where they complete their Residency, and the HHSCPCTP is Hawaii’s Residency Program. Many other states have their own versions of this bill already in place, and they have been a great success.
The Foundation has been diligent in helping the Community’s voice be heard at the Legislature, and we will continue to fight for you to have easier access to physicians on the Big Island.
